Use this calculator to determine how much you should allocate for hotels per night based on your overall trip budget, duration, and travel style.
What actually consumes an India travel budget
Trips here are rarely broken by the room rate. They are broken by distance. India is large enough that internal travel behaves like international travel elsewhere, and the line most people underestimate is the one between cities rather than the one for the hotel.
The four lines that matter
- Accommodation. The most predictable line, and the easiest to control, because you decide it in advance and it does not move once booked.
- Intercity transport. Flights and trains between regions. On a multi-city itinerary this frequently rivals or beats the accommodation total. Trains are dramatically cheaper than flights but need booking well ahead, particularly in the air-conditioned classes.
- Local transport. Taxis, auto-rickshaws and ride apps. Small per journey, large in aggregate, and heavily dependent on where you stayed. A hotel outside the centre quietly adds two paid journeys to every day of the trip.
- Food, entry fees and everything else. Monument entry for foreign visitors is often several times the domestic rate, and at the major sites it adds up faster than people expect.
Where the estimate will be wrong
Any calculator, including this one, works on averages, and three things break averages reliably. Season is the largest: the same room can double between September and late December, and the last week of December is its own category. Location within a city is the second, because a cheap room in the wrong place converts into daily taxi spend. The third is pace. Three cities in ten days costs far more than one city in ten days at the same nightly rate, because every move is a fare, a transfer and a day you paid for and spent in transit.
Treat the output as a planning range rather than a quote. For what a given nightly rate actually buys in a particular city, the regional guides go property by property with the month each rate was checked.
